Bye Bye Australia?

According to reports on the OutpostGallifrey website, Australian television listing magazine "TV Week" has announced that both the ABC network, and it's main rival - the SBS - have passed on the BBC's offer to screen Torchwood season one.

It also looks like no commercial channel fancies broadcasting the series either - leaving no chance for a Torchwood broadcast in Australia.

This conflicts with previous reports that the show would debut down under some time in 2007.

The ABC network, though, is expected to broadcast Captain Jack's return in "Doctor Who" season three later in the year. One reason the network may have passed up on Torchwood is the show's use of gratituitous language, and scenes of a sexual nature.

If you're an Australian Woodie, feel free to pent your anger below in the comments section. The second any developments occur, torchwood.tv will be here to report them.

The reason is more likely to be Australian TV's stupid prejudice against sci fi than any concerns about the content - both networks often screen shows far racier than Torchwood. But sci fi that isn't for children? What kind of geeks would watch that? Most fans have probably downloaded it by now anyway so the ABC is only hurting themselves because Doctor Who has been one of their highest rated shows for the last two years.

If Australia isn't going to air it... than chances are it isn't going to air anytime soon in America. Which is a shame. And I haven't heard anything yet about Canada airing it, and they co-sponsored the show! Hmmmm.

If rumors are correct... I think the BBC is going to retool the show for second series. If they can't sell the show outside of Britain, then a lot of money will have been lost. That would also explain why John Barrowman said last week on the Elaine Paige show that Torchwood would not air until early 2008.

I urge all Australians who are unhappy with this crazy decision by the ABC to make their feelings known at the following page on their website: http://www.abc.net.au/contact/

Be polite and be constructive but stand up and be counted. They were the ones who brought us up on Doctor Who, we can't let them abandon us now!
