Starz Brings in the Next Chapter of Torchwood

The internet is full of buzz this morning about Starz' acquisition of Torchwood! The US cable network is teaming up with show runner Russel T. Davies and the BBC to produce a 10 episode season to air summer 2011 on both Starz and on BBC One. The new series will star John Barrowman as Captain Jack and Eve Myles as Gwen Cooper along with other new characters.

This could actually be good! I had reservations at first, but this concept might just work. I gather they are doing one big storyline this time as well?

It looks very interesting, either way! And both Barrowman and Myles? That was more than anyone could hope for, really!

This is going to be interesting, with Moffat's and RTD's whoniverses running in competition (and not forgetting SJA too).

The new Who is OK, but I find myself missing RTD's characters and sparkle.

This is so much better than a FOX deal. Pay cable - is it too much to hope for more CJH booty???

I'm so excited about this! A new season of Torchwood!?! Gwen & Jack are back! Not a reboot! On the network that brought us Spartacus: Blood & Sand!

I'm starting to enjoy the new Season of Who and I love many parts of it...yet it's missing something that I can't put my finger on. I'm hoping Torchwood will balance that out for me. Looking forward to Sarah Jane as well.

Subscribing to a premium channel for one show, even one as good as Torchwood will not happen for me. Guess I'll have to go the pirate route and use bit torrent and then buy them on DVD.

If you have Netflix, they show Starz shows on there...

Starz series are usually quite good. Spartacus is a fantastic show. I think they will do good by Torchwood.

And Starz series are shown a week or two later on some of the Encore channels, most of which aren't premium any more.

A ten part story? TEN? This is going to be epic... but not neccessarily in a good way. I like variety in TW - new stories every week with a conclusion, not continuous cliff hangers.

Also, Digital Spy said that the show won't be based in Cardiff but all over the world (or something to that effect)... not sure what to make of that really. Cardiff gave the show a sense of place and atmosphere. An international adventure sounds a bit James Bond to me, with added aliens.

My thoughts exactly. I mean I'm thrilled it's back, just sucks it won't be based in Cardiff anymore. I'm hoping they won't abandon Cardiff completely.

I'm just picturing the trailer for it right now, it will be epic. It will be shot in 2.35:1 (UWS) and have the mandatory fadeouts on each scene.

John Barrowman running in slow motion on a runway at an airport. A huge explosion behind him.

Eve Myles shooting a blowfish runninng through the streets of Cardiff, whilst hanging out the side of a helicoptor.

The Rock headbutting a Weevil in a NY subway. Sorry I forgot to mention, The Rock was in it. So yeah, The Rock.

Another new American character will be introduced which be a sexy blonde scientist who wears glasses, and Gwen hates. This charcter will be played by either Britney Spears or Paris Hilton. The character will always be seen at a computer keyboard and will be able to do absolutely anything requested off her in lightening speed.

Right at the end of the trailer we see all 4 of them standing next to each other. All of them laughing and two of them pushing each other. We hear over the top of the laughing . . . . Torchwood (deep vioce) returning 2011 on BBC Worldwide.

RTD, bring back Ianto. It's sci-fi so you can manage it.

I'm 50% excited that the show will be back next year, and 50% nervous about the new American elements. I'm glad it's not a true remake, and the globe-trotting aspect could be kinda cool; but then, they also might make the sure more tame (especially around Captain Jack's sexuality) and less dark. I guess there's nothing to do but wait and see . . .

By the way, does anyone know if there will be any new Torchwood novels coming out? (my site has reviews of all the ones out so far, but I'd like more!)

There are some new audio tales coming out next year, but I haven't heard about any new books.

Given that it's Starz, I don't think we have to worry too much about them taming the sexuality aspect. From what little I've seen of Spartacus, it's pretty darned steamy!

Yeah. Spartacus regularly features full frontal male & female nudity. It also has gay characters and situations including guy on guy anal sex; something Torchwood has never given us. Spartacus is also drenched in gore and adult language. I'm not worried about Torchwood having to be toned down at all!

I wonder if the end of the comic "Shrouded" will relate.

NEWS!

According to Digital Spy, details of three new characters have been released:

What do we think? Not too sure about there being another paedophile storyline... maybe we're misguided with our fears that a US based TW won't be gritty enough, and actually it'll go the other way and become a bit nasty?

Planet Gallifrey is saying those casting calls are actually for Shameless, but they don't cite a source.

At this point, I view Torchwood kind of like a lover that has cheated on me that I am not ready to give up. Lord knows that we have all been majorly jerked around, when it comes to this show and I personally have experienced some of the most poignant and incredible television, that I have ever witnessed. I was blown away by the episode where He meets the real Captain Jack Harkness. Ianto's death shocked me, in the moment, as hard as if I had really lost someone and I feel COE was just wrong on so many levels and right on some. I felt ripped off, as a loyal fan that they not only did the season as a five part mini series, but that the episodes were only one hour long. And the waiting to even hear if the show was coming back.

Like I said, I am not ready to give up on Torchwood just yet, but I hope to hell that the new season is gonna be worth the aggravation that I have felt so far and that RTD does not pull the kind of stunts on us fans that he did in COE.

Torchwood is awesome. This American fan looks forward to an international season. I also wouldn't mind a little bit of time travel to bring back the characters I already miss!
