The Institute will have a DOG

Torchwood won't have K-9 but they will have their own DOG. This slow news weekend gives me the chance to start a campaign against the BBC3 logo DOG or BUG that will likely deface the screen during Torchwood broadcasts.

DWConfidential Screencap from BBC3

I know I am not the first to complain about the Digital Originated Graphics (DOG) on BBC3 and louder voices have not convinced them to change it. The viewing masses just can't stay quiet any longer damnit. I really don't mind DOGs (a better acronym is Distracting Onscreen Graphics) if they are small, in the bottom right corner and translucent. That way they do the job of IDing the station without getting in the way. The BBC3 DOG is big, 1/3 of the way in on the top, and opaque.

I do know some of the BBC brass check up on this page, so here is our chance to stand together and fight the power! Sign your name in the comments if you choose to be part of this great simmering movement against the DOG! (Well at least during Torchwood broadcasts)

I so HATE the on-screen logo`s, and they constantly distract. There is no need for any logo on my screen, but if I HAD to put up with one,for gods sakes make it SMALL !

I agree - why do it and in such an irritating place ?

Talk about stupid

I am just glad the DOG is not iridescent.

But seriously, if it were more to the corner of the screen and translucent I would not have problems with it.

The policy is meant to be that the DOG is to be removed during dramas, at least it used to be, I haven't watched BBC Three in a while. So if that is the case, it should disappear during Torchwood (and I hope it does, as the BBC3 DOG is particularly distracting compared to more modest offerings on other channels).

Hope you are right, the last drama I saw from BBC3 was Funland and that had the obnoxious DOG on it. That was months ago though, have they changed their policy since then?

Get rid of the DOGs and bring in the K-9!

'DOGs' are the most patronising thing about television in this day and age.
They are distracting and irritating and someone needs to take a stand and tell the TV exectutives to stop being such fools and get rid of them.
TV is constantly dumbing down and spoonfeeding its audiences with mindless television, low quality programming and pretentious advertising. Not only do they have the audacity to deny the people who work on any show any credit by squashing up the end credits and talking over them but now they have to deface the art of the onscreen picture with a daft logo reminding people which channel they switched onto.
Oh, I could go on, but I shan't...

consider yourself lucky ... here in the US the DOGs can be huge previews of upcoming shows ... not just the TV channel logo ...

It's really obnoxious the way it's almost right in the middle of the screen - no one would mind it in the corner, but this? GAH.

I think this is the most comments we've ever had for one topic - what do you reckon Kurly? Oh, and I support the fight against DOGS all the way!!!

Interestingly, tonight's repeat of Doctor Who didn't have a DOG...

The BBC THREE on-screen logo is only 1/3rd of the way into the screen for 16:9 ratio viewers (widescreen) and was delibrately placed that far in so as to still be visible in the top corner for those watching in 4:3 modes.
Heaven forbid they move it to the top-left of the 16:9 screen because the poor 4:3 viewers won't get reminded what channel they're watching every rapid-eye-movement they make...

My quibble that semi-relates to this, is when they view a repeated program but with a signer for the deaf. I have no arguement against signing,i think it's an amazingly skilled way of communication, but i do believe that the signer doesn't need to be in full head-to-toe shot taking up 1/3rd of the screen with the original footage on a reduce display size ASWELL! The signer should be viewed from the waste upwards, and the footage could still be displayed at full screen ratio.

Why don't we send in a digital list of people's names, against BBC THREE on-screen-graphic during Torchwood. We'll never get it removed completely but i'm sure they would consider fading it off after the first 5minutes each episode...

I've just finished a discussion over the local town repeater using my amatur radio transceiver, about the subject of how people watching programs in 16:9 format have the channel-graphic nearly mid screen. One chap commented that he own's a plasma screen television which he left on BBC Three all night when he fell asleep. He said that when he woke up and turned the channel over the BBC THREE logo could still be seen on the screen as a ghost-y image. In conclusion we agreed that this was probably caused by 'screen-burn' as the pixels of the television where the logo constantly resides were not changing colour so many hundred times a minute as they are meant to, and therefore being a bright white-ish colour had caused a temporary 'etch' effect.
The guy in question is now extremely paranoid that this caould happen again and again on many channels with logo's.
Although the ghosted image eventually disappeared twenty mins later it still leaves room for thought...

i hate those things in general. i don't watch a lot of tv so i particularly noticed it during torchwood because of the positioning. as the commenter said earlier at least it's not as bad as the states BUT i do think this new one is a definate step closer in that direction.

STOP THE ROT NOW BEEB!!!

Totally agree - if I'm watching any of the DOG'd channels, I'm most likely watching on Freeview, Sky or digital cable, so if I want to check what channel I'm on, I just have to press the info button. Totally pointless!
