Heartbreak of Jack & Ianto

One of the things I've found most satisfying with the whole Children of Earth storyline is how well it's served the Jack and Ianto relationship. Honestly, the tail end of series one their relationship was utterly laughable - but how far we've come since then. Between series two, the recent audio dramas and this run of adventures, I'm at last feeling their love. It's real, and at times it's so convincingly heartbreaking.

Yes, I've seen Day Four at last - but I won't say anything further on the matter, not wanting to spoil anything for readers outside of the UK or Australia. Let's just say, it's another chapter in the "Janto" relationship, and quite an important one...

If you haven't seen the episode yet, avoid the comments section below.

Children of Earth - Day Four was watched by 6.2 million viewers; that's the highest figure yet! Normally shows that run across five nights see a drop-off throughout the week. Well, Torchwood is the exception! 27% of the available viewing audience were watching at the time, and it was the 2nd most watched programme of the day.

Our friends at the Doctor Who News Page report that 82,000 watched on BBC HD, and a further 232,000 watched the BBC Three repeat. A great success!

Torchwood: Children of Earth - Day Five is the final part of the serial, and airs tonight at 9pm on BBC One. It follows 15 hours later on Australian television's UKTV Channel.

I'm still in rather a state of shock.
The crying of thousands of fangirl was definately heard last night, I was the loudest.
I can't believe they'd do that, the BBC are bad. Make us wait 14 or whatever months and then take Yanny away... *breaks down* :'(
Amazing episode though.

It really was heartbreaking wasn't it? The worst thing was Ianto dying but a close second was the fact that Jack didn't even say he loved him. Ianto was dying and Jack still couldn't say it. The more we go through CoE, the less I like Jack to be honest. I wish they'd have killed Gwen instead, at least Ianto had a proper role in the team and was an interesting character.

If I know anything about TW and RTD I'm not gonna believe that Ianto is 'dead' yet. I'll believe after tonights episode but until then I still believe that there's an opportunity for him to 'come back'.

I was crying my heart out, i still can't believe he's dead. I love Ianto, I thought it was strange that the previous episode he kept going on about growing old and jack watching him die. Why did he have to die :'(

I liked Ianto - he would have been by far my last choice to die of the team even back when they were five (every time he "dies", I hope that Jack's invincibility will break... seriously, the man is the most annoying character on television), but I've enjoyed Children of Earth, so I'm willing to let them off if the ending works.

Often, however, RTD has a bit of a problem with endings. I'm going to wait and see.

I found Ianto´s death scene devastating, but not as much as when Tosh died because I´m sure he´ll be brought back tomorrow. I´ve just checked the cast list and Paul Copley (who plays Clem) is not listed in the credits, GDL is and they both died so........

"After a thousand years, you won't even remember my name..." Most heart-breaking line of the whole eppy. I think having a reset of some sort wouldn't do his character or his death justice, RIP Ianto.

I agree on the figures always dropping the further into a show you get, it never EVER goes up in my experience - until now. I can only hope tonight's eppy gets phenomenal ratings. I won't be contributing to 'em sadly, as i have ruddy work - but I'll certainly be catching it on BBC3 or iPlayer!

Damn You TW & RTD

I take it jack, "the face of Beau" harkness won't be back, but will torchwood?

I personally thought it was unnecessary to kill his grandson - his daughter still wouldn't have forgiven him for even thinking of sacrificing the boy, so he could still have left heartbroken, without that poor child being killed - and yes I know its only a story, but sometimes these things hit a nerve harder because of local events - particularly the tower block fire in Camberwell! Do we need children dying in stories, isn't real life bad enough?

(My favourite Jack Harkness / Dr Who episode is the one where the little boy " Are you my mummy?" is saved .......... so you can see where I am coming from!)

Well they better enjoy those figures of 6.2 million. Cause no one will give RTD a chance again after this fiasco. Ep 5 was lazily done. Pure and simple.

torchwood was amazing all week. It was edge of the seat stuff. I am a huge torchwood fan but also a mentalist fan and scarficed an epsiode of it just to watch the show. I hope the show bck again next year. Ianto please please come bck i miss you all ready i cried my eyes out. It wasnt fair that Jack couldnt tell Ianto he loved him bck but the heartbreak showed when he said dont leave me please dont leave me. Like the doctor is jack destined to be alone?

i love torchwood but CoE endding was rubbish. is RTD trying to make jack more like the doctor by being a lonely wonderer or has he given up on both shows altogether? Another thing is Ianto didn;t have to die it was a stupid story line and i h8 it. when to TW hub blow up why didnt the rift act up and start messing up time again? or is that how they are going to get everyone bk again?? i would be perfectly happy is the rift turned bk time and none of the past 5 days ever happened.Ianto would be alive, the hub would be intact and Jack's grandson would be alive. one of the worst endings ever

Anybody know who the guy is who went into the chamber in Episode 4? I thought he was a gonna for sure, but instead we're rewarded with him ripping his t-shirt off. Shame the Alien hadn't slimed his trousers too.

I'm not sure if i should be smoking a cigarette, or crying hysterically while balled up in the corner...Either way,the writers have left me with a head full of grog and my knickers about my ankles, figuratively speaking. When i'd first heard of torchwood, i thought it would get lost wandering beyond the safety of the little blue box. And it almost did. More than one episode tried to imitate all of the fun campyness, but lacked the quirky wit of a gallifreyan vagabond to balance it out. ...then, about halfway into season one, the cast, writers, and directors found their stride. This was to be about the messes that the doctor leaves behind, and the ones he never saw. ...Beyond the confines of the police box apperantly, there's a universe that only smiles through it's tears. A universe that might be a tad close to our flats. One where desire is muddled, love is unrequited, and the best solutions available is a slapshod patch.
So, almost seemingly against my will, i've been drawn in. Spent some two odd years now getting cozy with these half mad people, led by one immortal to clean up after another immortals messy fallout. I admit. I've become a fan. I like the more adult storylines, getting to peek through the TARDIS's keyhole and into the bedroom antics of the people beyond it. Seeing that in fact humans are not as nearly as helpless as the doctor would lead you to think!
That all being said...The finale of season two was like someone stealing my car while i was napping in the back seat. This five part miniseries akin to being kicked in the gut while someone shoots your brother. We'd always expected it to end this way, but not this soon. ...Perhaps akin to finding out in act two who the killer was in would throw off a murder mystery novel. Perhaps they will surprise me again, and leap out of the plot corner they've painted in...We will have to see! But i have to say, i WILL miss Ianto. Out of all the characters, he was the most like any of us, and i think that without his humanity to redeem them(especially jack) that the rest will be cast adrift, gradually fading off into the distance beyond even the reach of mighty Rassilon himself.

We shall see.

A painful bit of pleasure, to be certain. The end reiterates the hard, hard lesson that so many now have learned by being around the Doctor. One only has to watch the first RTD episode "Rose" to see one of the most obvious traits of the Doctor, and his "fixed point" friend, the Captain, is the wave of devistation that tends to accompany them.

To echo the previous blogger "Entropolis," the older Captain Jack gets, the further he moves away from the rationalism of humanity. "One child" versus millions looks good on paper, but who could really sacrifice their own blood kin? Obviously someone who has lived literal lifetimes and will live countless more.

However, it seems that maybe RTD has purposefully moved the Captain towards a somewhat darked place that the Doctor, appearing even more lacking in a soul. As cold as the Doctor can be, he most often teeters on the side of humanity. This leads me to think that maybe there is yet one more lesson for the current Doctor to teach the Captain, as a potential meeting in space is now more possible than before.
