They Punish the Earth Defenders

He goes on, "The five episodes, the miniseries as I call it, are incredible - I have no doubt about that - but personally, I felt like we were being punished. Other shows move from BBC 3 and 2 to 1, and they don't get cut. So why are we? It felt like every time we moved we had to prove ourselves."
It's a good point. Have the BBC an agenda against the series? What form will series 4 take (if commissioned...)? And just how will Russell T Davies move to America - as he confirmed to Mark Lawson during an interview with Front Row last night - have upon the series' future?
Torchwood: America anybody...?
The Radio Times also has a complete production rundown, that begins January 2008 with the initial scripts being planned, to the completion of post-production earlier this month.
Buy the listings magazine for £1.10. Most of the week's other television and radio periodicals contain information about the show, with interviews with various members of the cast and crew.

RTD talks 'Torchwood' and, um, that other show
In a piece published the other day, American TV critic Alan Sepinwall spoke to our main man Russell T. Davies about both 'Doctor Who' and 'Torchwood: CoE'.
Even though the article was written as a tie-in to the American premiere of a DW special, the article contains a surprising amount of Torchwood talk. RTD speaks about the possibility of a fourth series (and what format it could take), his own use of the word "epic", and whether or not Jack really is The Face of Boe. (Answer: C'mon, it's RTD!)
The full article is found online here.

BFI: Russell T. Davies on the Future of Torchwood
According to this article among other sources, when asked about the future of Torchwood, Russell T. Davies stated that Series 4 is "ready to go". He also has hopes for further crossover with the parent show, Doctor Who. Davies was still tight lipped about the official air date for the series, saying they have it set, but it is still to early for it to go public.

Get it while it's hot (and cheap!)
In other news, the latest issue of SFX Magazine (number #184) contains a preview of the series, which includes an interview with writer Russell T Davies. There's also a talk with John Barrowman and Eve Myles. You can pick the magazine up now, for £3.99.Finally, now that it's been confirmed that Torchwood: Children of Earth will air at some point in July across the UK, US and Australia I think that it makes sense that I bid adieu to this site at the end of that month, once all five episodes have aired. So, July 31st it is (aptly, that's the day that Outpost Gallifrey and Doctor Who Forum close their doors for the last time too...)
Rest assured, the site will live on, through the very brilliant team of writers that it has aquired the services of over the last few months.

The Most Perfect Timing
"It all sort of gradually came together. I actually vaguely pitched the idea for the program to [executive producer] Julie Gardner before Doctor Who, when we were working together on a production of Casanova. We both love science fiction, and we used to talk about shows like Buffy [the Vampire Slayer], and one of the great joys of working together was discovering that we both loved that sort of material. She said, 'Wouldn't it be great to do that sort of thing in Britain?' So I pitched the opening scene there and then in an e-mail, and she said it was marvelous. So after Doctor Who became a success, we began talking about it."
"We also had an enormous response to John Barrowman, who just became a star overnight in a supporting role. People just loved him, and he had been a star-in-waiting for many years, so we were lucky to have grabbed him at the right time."
"We only ever booked him for five episodes. I mean, a bisexual con man from the 51st century: Did you ever think that was going to work? On paper, I had doubts about it myself. So I thought, 'Oh, five episodes of that will do!' I thought he would run out of charm by then. But he turned out to be the most extraordinary success, which was John, I have to say, and all of the writers loved writing for him."
In other news, issue# 370 of Doctor Who Magazine comes out next week in the UK, and we're promised some Torchwood news inside. And there's been suggestions that episode seven of this year's Doctor Who, "The Idiot's Lantern", may have yet more Torchwood references, so as ever, keep your eyes and ears peeled folks!

He Loves Me...He Loves Me Not
RUSSELL - HE DOES LOVE US. SO THERE.
"It's actually not as busy as you think. American series run for 22, 23 or 24 episodes a year, and we've only got 13 episodes a season. So it's really no heavier than an American workload, and you all seem to survive! Unfortunately, I have a suspicion that your executives are chauffeur limo-ed from meeting to meeting, whereas I have to get the bus. But there are a lot of systems in place, and there's a huge team here. So we've spent a long time setting up Torchwood, to make sure that both shows can run simultaneously. Torchwood is a bit more of a formula show than Doctor Who. It's more capable of running itself. We must always remember that Doctor Who is the parent show and is the show that gets the 44 percent share of the audience [in the United Kingdom], so that's the show that I will always be looking after. That's where my heart is as well. Despite the fact that I created Torchwood, Doctor Who needs constant love and attention." The first season of Doctor Who airs on SCI FI in the United States on Fridays at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
Make what you will of this interview. Personally I think he's simply been taken 100% out of context. Of course he loves Torchwood. Who wouldn't. It has the promise of being a fantastic show. As we all know.

Church Bulletin
Source: http://www.cardiffmardigras.co.uk
However there is bad news for all you Jordan fans out there, Russell says he will definitely not be letting her anywhere near The Hub as the tabloids had reported back in December. Plus RTD said that for those of you who had been already lining up at your local cineplex in hope of a WHO movie, it's going to be a very long wait.
In another article released yesterday, (April Fool's Day) I learned that WHO is coming here to my neck of the woods, the Seattle area! According to this report Bill Gates will be out on Lake Washington in an episode and abducted by aliens. A clever article, but quite obviously a put-on. Of course we all know, if Gates were abducted, the Doctor and the other powers that be would say, "enjoy the trip."

News From The Hub
NOEL CLARKE AS "MICKEY SMITH"
The big news here is that Noel Clarke, the actor behind the role of Mickey Smith, is writing an episode for the series. Russell T Davies (lets just call him RTD for my aching hands sake!) says of Noel's involement: "Noel's just hit the headlines with his controversial script for the successful UK movie Kidulthood, but we've actually been talking about this for quite some time. The man is bursting with ideas! We have to add half an hour on to script sessions, just to hear him talk. I've also picked up quite a few tips on how to talk to the laydeez, though when I'm gonna use them, I don't know! Noel's a big sci-fi fan, and I think he's going to find some radical ideas to take Torchwood in completely new directions."
There's an interesting development too. Helen Raynor, script editor on both series of Doctor Who, will be penning one episode, although Russell confirms that this wasn't planned! He says "This was a bit of a scary prospect - first of all, it was an over-commission, which means an extra script...but Helen's script was so good - no, in fact it was brilliant - it's one of the best first scripts I've ever read, so it's gone straight into the shooting shedule." Over-commission? Does this mean what I think it does? 14 scripts?!? Unless one episode is dropped, could we have a 14 part series on our hands?
Other confirmed writers include PJ Hammond, Chris Chibnall (who's writing episode two, and at least three other episodes as well) and newcomer Si Spencer (Whose previous work includes work such as Life During Wartime, apparently).
DIRECTORS
The first 'block' of episodes (one of which is episode one) will begin filming in May, under the helm of director Brian Kelly.
EPISODE TITLES
The first episode has the title of "Flotsam and Jetsam". Interestingly RTD notes the series as "Series One". Are more series planned for the show? This is the first indication that it won't be a one-series-wonder!
RUSSELL . T . DAVIES AND CHRIS CHIBNALL
RTD has confirmed that he'll only be writing two scripts for series one (episode one and, maybe, the finale episode 13). Chris Chibnall has now joined Russell in the show's editorial team, overseeing scripts and in RTD's own words has "been helping me plan and shape the entire season". So that'll be Torchwood, "created by Russell .T. Davies and Chris Chibnall" then.
RICHARD STOKES INTERVIEW
Here's some nuggets of information the new producer told the magazine:
+ "We keep talking about a noir style"
+ "Russell and Chris have filled their scripts with great humour"
+ "The show will touch on universal truths in the human condition"
+ "(Jack) is the heroic lead. He requires some subtle changes."
I'll post more specific comments on this interview later in the week.
THE HUB
Buy this month's Doctor Who Magazine just for this fantastic column, written by none other than RTD. Here he tells how the BBC are planning for Doctor Who and Torchwood's futures so much that for Doctor Who Series Three and Torchwood Series One production will move to a "Hollywoodesque" film set 20 miles from the current studios. Here, Doctor Who and Torchwood will film back-to-back. Russell has nick-named the new studio "Camelot". So Camelot it is then! Anyway, the interseting news is that Torchwood's main interior has been named "The Hub". The set has already been designed, and when the column was written at the start of March, construction had started on it. So it should be ready any day now! The Hub is directly next to the TARDIS interior, so a scene in the TARDIS could be filmed one minute, with scenes for Torchwood's Hub immediately after!
DOCTOR WHO AIRDATE (UK VIEWERS)
Sorry to advertise the show's broadcast details here, but RTD has given all fans one simple mission this month: to promote the show's debut whenever possible. So, who am I to argue with the bossman!
Saturday April 15th, BBC One, 7PM
EPISODE GUIDE
Here's the details that are currently confirmed:

OTHER STUFF
Further updates will follow later. Kurly's probably typing away at his Noel Clarke bio as we speak. I'll update you on the Richard Stokes interview very soon, I just want to respect DWM and wait a few days before posting (too heavily) from their work. They've done a fantastic job this month (and every month infact) and I want to say a big thank you to all the guys and gals who made this month's issue possible.
PS
Well done Kurly on the site's new look! Absolutely fantastic. You've outdone yourself yet again!

Torchwood Ignites In May
"We start filming in May, and we should be on in this country [England] in October," Davies said in an interview. "So we'll have two shows running simultaneously, which will be fun."
This corrosponds with yesturday's news, that production begings April 23rd (although I'd now guess this was more likely to be rehearsals for the actual cast than any specific filming). One 'source' on OutpostGallifrey recently let slip that filming begins May 1st, but whether you take this story with one big fat lump of salt is entirely up to you. One thing is for sure though: The media are going to go crazy over this series, just like they did for Doctor Who. And torchwoodtv will be there to record every moment of it.

Keep Calm
Source:http://torchwood.time-and-space.co.uk/
Finally, two new names have also been thrown into the mix, Helen Raynor as script editor and Matt Savage as designer. More on them in forthcoming posts . . . well that is if they are still associated with the show by the time I can get around to writing about them.

Sir Russell
Source:http://www.lafreak.freeserve.co.uk
The Stage Online called him the number one mover and shaker in the world of theatre and light entertainment for the year. (He was snubbed in the heavy entertainment category!) The Guardian listed him among the growing number of gays who are shaping Britain last month. RTD had an amazing 2005, earlier in the year he was named the 14th most powerful person in UK media and awarded an honorary fellowship from Swansea Institute.
Mind you Russell still hasn't gotten his knighthood, but bare in mind that all this recognition has come prior to the production of Torchwood. One can only imagine what's in store for RTD once his new baby is broadcast.
However that said, on a serious note I can not currently join the RTD love fest if this recent report that Derek Acorah will be on the new season of Doctor Who is acurate. Maybe Russell didn't have a say in it, but to whoever did, there is simply no place on WHO for scam artists. Even if it is a self-depricating cameo, it will give publicity to somebody who preys on people's misery instead of the WHO standard of publicity for critical thinking.

Russell is an ageist!
Source:http://www.bbc.co.uk
While not as young as Peter Davision when he took on the role of the Doctor, David Tennant is a young 34. He will probably need a 50+ year old companion after Billie leaves the show in order for WHO to be in compliance with this new legislation.
John Barrowman is only 38 which means that the mysterious "Gwen" of Torchwood will have to be recruited from the geriatric set as well. So we obviously can't trust all these rumours about RTD trying out teen pop singers for the part. Nope it looks like the writing is on the wall, Gwen will be played by Angela Lansbury.
PS - Torchwood was unveiled as a sexier version of Doctor Who, but I wonder if it will ever get as kinky as this film.

He's just a bit more flexible when it comes to dancing
The Doctor doesn't have much fashion sense for one thing. In the show he generally picks up an attractive young female companion, shows her around the galaxy, then no sooner after he has dropped her off on a convenient planet, he picks up a replacement. Sounds like a straight guy to me.
Source:http://sterlingtimes.org
With Captain Jack the attraction is quite a bit more obvious, and of course Torchwood will play up to that demographic. It is reported that RTD discusses why WHO has so many gay fans and talks about Captain Jack in this week's edition of The Pink Paper #887 which is a free paper available all over the UK. Sorry can't get my hands on one here in the US and the two-page article is not at their online site, so UK readers feel free to give us the inside scoop in the comments below if you run across one.
I suspect most gays here in the States, like everybody else, could care less about Doctor Who. But that could all change with Torchwood. Captain Jack might be the next Xena!
Late Update: RTD will talk Torchwood in the forthcoming issue of SFX magazine according to this report.

Bigger, better and pinker
Source:http://www.cardiffmardigras.co.uk
OK I realise this event is old news, but the photos from the Mardi Gras are now up online. So I came across this one of Russell and Charlotte Church and I thought perhaps I could post it and get those rumours about her and Torchwood flowing again! Since the news broke that Charlotte won't be connected with the show I have had one hell of a time coming up with daily posts.

What's in a name? Pt. II
Source:http://www.visimag.com/tvzone
RTD's 1997/1998 series The Grand
She is not to be confused with the other Esme Harkness from Russell's dark 1993 children's series Century Falls. Esme and Alice Harkness apparently were straight-laced sisters who ran a shop and worked against all the demon-raising that was going on in the town. If that weren't enough, Mary Wimbush, the actress who played Esme in Century Falls, played Aunt Lavinia in the only other Doctor Who spinoff: K9 and Company. Coincidence? I think not.

The Sincerity Squad
Barrowman is open about his sexuality and beliefs. He didn't care who he might offend when he said the following to The Glasgow Herald: "Organised religion says gay men are evil. So why would I want a marriage from a belief system that hates me?" In an old interview for US Magazine JB said that after accidently going into a religious chatroom he wrote to them, "You call yourself Christians, so why are you hating all these people?"
Source:http://www.bbc.co.uk
Charlotte Church was just named the most sincere female celebrity in a British poll. We already know she is not shy, but did you know that at the tender age of 15 she was already more insightful than most Americans? In reference to 9/11/2001 she told The Sunday Times after that attack, "People overdramatise and lose perspective."
And Torchwood writer/producer Russell T Davies who came up with the groundbreaking Queer as Folk
Good for you Russell, and good for us, as it looks like we are in store for a show that is being put together by intelligent adults for intelligent adults.

Please Russell, can you autograph my _______ ?
Russell accepted a TV award on behalf of Christopher Eccleston earlier this week for that other minor show on BBC1 he works on. The name is on the tip of my tongue . . . Doctor something. Apparently Eccleston was jeered for not showing up at the self-congratulatory affair.
Source:http://wikipedia.org/
If anybody happens to make it to the signing please send us a first-hand report. Perhaps you can talk with Russell and convince him to spill some more news about Torchwood. Doesn't Davies understand that I am dying for some real content for this webpage damnit!
